As we start the final term of the year, we are all hoping for a bit of sunshine in Year 2 as our final topic is 'The Seaside'.
The children seems so grown up now and have returned with super attitudes to their learning.
We have started the term in English using a film 'The Ugly Sharkling' to continue our work on recounts. The children have been making great use of adjectives, expanded noun phrases and punctuation in their writing. Over this term, we will be using a range of books including 'The lighthouse keepers Tea' and 'Fantastic Mr Fox' as starting points for our writing. We will also be reading and writing instructions and poetry and continuing to develop our spelling and grammar skills.
In Maths, our topics will be Fractions, Time, Statistics, Measurements and direction. We will keep practicing our arithmetic skills and developing reasoning and problems solving.
In Science, we will be learning about plants and focusing on seeds and bulbs. We will be planting and investigating the best conditions for plants to grow. In the second part of the term we will complete our second unit this year on animals and think about living things and their habitats, including life cycles.
As part of our seaside topic, we will be locating seasides, learning about human and physical features and learning about seaside holidays of the past. Our work in Art and DT will link and include sketching shells, mixing colours for the sea and sky and designing beach huts.

After a wonderful first term in Year 2 we are all very excited to get started on our new topic ‘Castles’.
We are going to have lots of fun learning all about castles, their location, why they were built and the features we might find. This will also involve us finding out about all the different people who liked in castles and the jobs they did including Knights. Hopefully, at the end of our topic, we will have visit to a castle and a medieval themed day with dancing and a banquet.
In our English work, we are going to look at ‘The Clockwork Dragon’ by Jonathon Emmett and have some fun with dragons before moving on to using all our topic work to write our own fact sheets. In the second half of the term we are going to complete a book study and lots of fun work using ‘The Twits’ By Roald Dahl.
Maths this half term will include multiplication and division when we will all secure our 2x, 5x and 10x tables and start to think about our 3x and 4x. We will continue our work on length and measuring with lots of fun practical lessons before moving on to Money and Fractions later in the term.
Our Science topic for the term is Materials and their properties. We will have a big focus on Scientific vocabulary and carry out a range of investigators. Children will also learn about recycling and how we make good use of all materials.

The children have all returned to school happy and ready to learn. They all seem so grown up and have adapted well to Year 2 and are eager to learn. Los of information about our learning this half term an be found here.
Our topic this term is 'The Great Fire of London' which we have started by understanding where London is and how long ago 1666 was. We will then find out about how, when and where it started as well as how it spread and ended. The children will be producing a range of artwork linked to the fire and the London skyline. This will also link to our English work and the book, 'Toby and the Great fire of London'.
In English, we have started with 'Gordon's Great Escape' and 'The Smeds and The Smoos'. We are also going to using the 'Horrid Henry' stories and 'The Jolly Postman' to support our written work. The children will also be continuing to practice their handwriting. As well as all this, we are continuing our daily Phonics sessions and guided reading.
In Maths, we are consolidating our understanding of number and place value up to 100 before moving onto addition and subtraction. At the end of the term we will be learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.
Our first Science topic is 'Human and Animals' where we will be learning about animals growth and survival and how we keep ourselves healthy.
